SEED

This project supports students from malnourished and poverty-hit tribal areas of Melghat in Amravati district and Dahanu block of Palghar district of Maharashtra. For long, tribal regions in India have been in the foreground of socio-economic backwardness. Despite the several measures to bring about a change in the lives of tribal populations, the problems have continued to persist.

The decision to focus on educating specially children especially from these malnutrition and poverty-hit tribal areas was in view of the dire needs of the people residing in these regions. Marked by appallingly high levels of poverty, Illiteracy, and malnutrition, these tribal groups remain the most marginalized sections of society so far untouched by any modern or scientific development.

Realizing that a long-term, consistent, and systematic approach is what is required to resolve the situation, this program running since 1997, offers to bring about a change in the destiny of tribal populations through providing care and education to their children.

ENG

At present, the ENG program is focused on the educational rehabilitation of children affected by farmer suicides; from all district in the drought-hit all regions of Maharashtra, and housing them in WERC. Maharashtra is a standout amongst the most terribly drought-hit states in recent years, which has exponentially deteriorated the farmers’ economic condition. Having been deprived of their only means of livelihood, many farmers have chosen to end their lives.

This has forced their children to work in fields, or undertake some other kind of work for livelihood, leaving no other option but to discontinue their education. Moreover, lack of proper education and guidance has adversely affected the mental& emotional well-being of the people, leading some of them to taking step of ending their lives.

BJS has thus decided to support the families affected by farmer suicides, by providing their children with mainstream education and historic development in the WERC center.

Paid Students

Daily Needs

As the students come from very impoverished families, the hostel even provides them with items of daily use during their stay at the campus. For instance, the students are provided with daily essentials like toiletries (including towels, toothpaste/brushes, soap, and oil and nail cutters). They are even provided with footwear and every day clothes as well as school uniforms.

The students stays in hostel rooms which are fully furnished with cots, mattresses, study tables and chairs, bed linen like sheets and blankets, etc.

Home Visits

The objective of home visits is to keep children in touch with their own background and family members and keep their native culture alive within them. For this reason, 2 scheduled home visits are planned during Diwali and summer holidays in a year, under supervision and company of BJS personnel. Thereby, children get to meet their near and dear ones and spend time with them for 3 months a year, thus also assuaging their homesickness.
